“Handy Day”
Presented By:  Karl Rohnke

How about half a day with Karl Rohnke, picking and playing games and doing initiatives that requires only the use of your hands, and calling that a "Handy Day", or , "Half-a-Handy Day" to be precise!

It's true, we'll spend four hours doing and talking about only non-prop activities that require just a hand, and sometimes two. Some of the activities are classics, easily recognizable, but some, I'm pretty sure you will not have seen or tried, (I recently made them up).

Funn is obviously foremost, but I'd be disappointed if you didn't learn a thing or two.

Karl Rohnke graduated from Washington & Lee University (Lexington, VA) in 1960. After two drafted years in the U.S. Army, serving as a Medical Technologist, he used that medical training to secure a postion as a Med. Tech at a retirement community in California. This was followed by four years of teaching outdoor education in the Southern California area. Since that time, Karl has been an important "player" in the field of experiential/adventure education. He was a watch officer at Hurricane Island Outward Bound in 1967, and chief instructor at North Carolina Outward Bound until 1971. He left Outward Bound to become one of the founders of the Project Adventure program in Hamilton, MA, and worked there continuously until 1996. During his tenure at PA, he served as director and president of the company. Karl is also one of the founders of The High 5 Adventure Learning Center in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Karl has been the recipient of two A.E.E. (Association of Experiential Education) awards: The 1990 Stratton Practitioner's Award, and in 2000, he presented the Kurt Hahn Address at the national A.E.E. convention. Karl has written over 15 books that relate to the field of adventure education, including The Bottomless Bag Revival, Silver Bullets, Quicksilver, and Funn 'n Games.  Karl says he's retired but continues to travel worldwide presenting clinics about the use of games and initiative problems as applied to various pedagogic applications.  http://karlrohnke.com/

“Alchemy in Action”

Presented By:  Holly Baade

Alchemy is nothing more than the capacity to transmute the weighty problems and obstacles – which may be called the “lead” – in our lives into something of value and ultimately provide us with a greater sense of personal abundance or “gold” and self worth.

This workshop unearths through joyful and engaging activity underlying belief patterns present in the current human experience which prevent great ideas and inspiring dreams from taking shape and unfolding into new forms of creative expression and daring innovation.

With wisdom inspired by the ancient alchemists, participants will come to see how magic is really only a matter of clear intention and focused energy (combined with the capacity for self-observation and will-full action) during moments of uncertainty triggered by moving into the unknown.

For the Challenge Course Practioner, this program delves into a rich field of inquiry centered in human energy dynamics and experiential learning with application in youth and organizational development settings where cultivation of self-esteem and self-worth are paramount to creating positive change.

Holly L. Baade is an expert in human energy dynamics. She is a visionary in personal mastery, leadership development and organizational performance.  With 10 years as a facilitator, manager and consultant in the adventure-based learning industry, she has inspired thousands of individuals and coached hundreds of teams to move beyond perceived limitations.  She is an alumna of Sacramento State University and the University of Southern California's State Capital Center for Policy, Planning and Development. She holds degrees in Journalism and Government and a Masters in Public Administration.  In addition, Holly is a certified White Belt Nia Instructor and a member of the performing Red Tent Belly Dance Troupe.  Holly is the President of Extreme Calm Institute (www.extremecalm.com), whose mission is to inspire conscious thought and integral action in pursuit of personal freedom and global unity.

 "From Kids to Corporate"

Presented By:  Dave Vermilye
The vast majority of challenge courses around our country have been built for the purpose of working with kids, and are housed within not-for-profit organizations.  These organizations, always in need of finances, determine to use their resources in the corporate community.

Does your organization fit into that category?  If so, then you may have had a potential client tell you that their company did teambuilding on a ropes course and it didn’t do anything, or you may be running the same program for adults that you do for the kids at camp, or the school coming out for a day.  Have you ever had difficulty explaining to a prospective corporate client why you, whose mission is kids, can offer something meaningful for them?

If so, bring a copy of your organization’s mission and discover if your organization is meant to move from kids to the corporate arena.

Those attending this session will:
Dave Vermilye is owner of Edgeline Resources LLC.  Dave spent 25 years working in the not-for-profit sector.  Most of those years were focused on experiential learning of some kind.  From 1995-2006, Dave managed an experiential training and development arm of a non profit.  He has been working with adult and corporate clients for nearly 15 years.  In January of 2007, Due to mission differences, Dave embarked on his own business.  His first year of business on his own has been profitable, and he lives in Michigan.

Facilitation is an art, an ever dynamic process of give and take, learning and development. In this workshop we will explore the art of experiential facilitation by experimenting with creative yet practical tools and activities to enhance group experience. In a co-creative, engaging learning environment participants will develop innovative ways to support the process of group development and become more participant centered. Participants will gain new perspectives on their role as a facilitator and gather activities and ideas they can use to liven up their practice.

Whether you are new to facilitation or a seasoned veteran seeking inspiration, there is something in this workshop for you.

“What To Do With Only A Few”
Presented By:  Brian Brolin

I often hear... “Group games and initiatives are great with the larger classes, but what do you do with small groups of 1-6?”

For many years I’ve worked successfully with small groups in therapeutic programs and other situations, and often find myself one-on-one and needing more than a quiet chat.  This workshop will teach my favorite small group and 1:1 activities (indoor and out) useful with ages 9 to adult.  Participants will learn some basic magic tricks, knots, brain teasers, storytelling, VCC (Very Cool Crafts), juggling (scarves & balls), and more.

A $20 materials fee sends participants home with juggling scarves and balls, Stop-N’-Go Pre-Brief set, 2 rope activities, 2 magic tricks, a VCC, a Peteca, a leather story bag with 8 starter items, and an impressive handout packet.  A value of over $100!

Activities are used with the programmatic themes of social esteem, problem-solving, social skills development, decision-making, and goal-setting.  Processing and de-briefing issues will also be discussed.

Group size limited to 12.

Hours: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Tuition:  $100 ($80 + $20 materials fee)

“New Teachable Moments:
Processing the Experience”

Presented By:  Michelle Cummings

Need more to processing than sitting in a circle, asking questions, and talking about what happened?

This workshop will focus on all of the new processing activities Michelle has created since her book, "A Teachable Moment, A Facilitator's Guide to Activities for Processing, Debriefing, Reviewing, and Reflection" came out in 2005.  It will give you access to 20+ different processing tools that are simple and easy to use. You will learn how to make/do the activities yourself or find out where to get them. Increase the quality and value of your programs through powerful reflective learning.  These processing activities will help you creatively get your participants to take responsibility and ownership for their experiences and transfer those experiences to real life situations.

Learning Objectives:

Half of this workshop is show and tell, the other half is active and hands on.

Michelle Cummings has authored two books, “Bouldering Games for Kids”, an educational guide for traverse walls, and “Playing With a Full Deck”, 52 Team Activities With a Deck of Cards and co-authored “A Teachable Moment” A Facilitator’s Guide to Activities for Processing Debriefing, Reviewing, and Reflection.  Michelle grew up on a farm in Norton, Kansas and currently lives in Littleton, Colorado with her husband, Paul, and two sons, Dawson and Dylan.

"What Kind of Animal Are You?
Using Personality Style to Maximize Your Program's Effectiveness"
Presented By:  Craig Rider

If you want to be a more effective program leader, this is for you!  Whether you work with intact organizational teams, young people, or a loose-knit group of individuals, this framework can be applied easily to increase your effectiveness with any group.  This has stood the test of time having been observed consistently for thousands of years.  At the same time it is congruent with almost every current personality framework in use.

At this program you will learn how you can immediately apply this simple, yet powerful framework in your work.  It will help you understand your operating style preferences and those of your participants’.  Knowing this allows you to make the most of your own unique talents while matching them to the varying needs of different groups.  At the same time, it is a framework that can be passed on to your participants since it is easy enough to be understood by all groups.  An added bonus is that this knowledge will help you understand and communicate more effectively with others on your own work team as well as with potential customers.

The session is lively and interactive and you will have ample opportunity to share with and learn from other participants.  Numerous applications of this framework include leadership, teamwork, stress, and learning/teaching styles.  The bottom line, you will be able to help your groups achieve better results immediately.

Join us and be prepared to enjoy yourself while learning a powerful tool that you can begin to apply the very same day.
